Books and Major Works - Introduction
Since newspapers and magazines have provided the major receptacles for
my work for most of my working life, my articles, essays and such have,
more often than not, been tailored to the somewhat modest space
requirements of those "periodic" media. Thus it is that you will find
that most of my "pieces" come out in a range of two-thousand, to
five-thousand words.
This has not always been the case, however. On occasion I have turned
out manuscripts of eighty- to one-hundred-thousand words. And my
autobiography, which is a project in work, will substantially exceed
half-a-million words, and comprise six or seven volumes.
Someone, no doubt an Editor, has said that a written offering should be
patterned after a chorus-girls costume: It should be long enough to
cover the subject, but kept short enough to keep it interesting. I
have earnestly striven to hold my efforts within those permissive
bounds.
Several books under my imprimatur have found their way into print,
between hard covers, and have been merchandised to a global audience.
On other occasions, a manuscript that I considered quite worthy of
publication to an eagerly waiting audience, has utterly failed to elicit
the same level of enthusiasm on the part of the publishing fraternity.
So it goes in the writing game.
Cyber-publishing is a new idea, and one that both writers and publishers
are now struggling to understand. Only time will tell us if there is a
better way to present a book, than in the conventional form of printing
it on paper, and binding it between covers that are strong enough to
protect the volume from destruction, on its trip through the hands of a
great succession of readers. Inclusion of a book or two, or even more,
in this Site is something of an experiment, to see how cyber-publishing
works in practice. I invite your reaction to my offering(s).
If you enjoy a book that can be examined on line and down-loaded onto
your computer, tell me. If you prefer your books delivered in their own
commercial bindings, with a life-expectancy of half a century and the
easy portability of a ham sandwich, tell me that.
Whatever your verdict, enjoy! However placed into your hands, a good
book should be forever.
